Change of address in NSW: the records one update won't reach
Changing your address in NSW takes several separate stops, because MyServiceNSW, myGov, the electoral roll, the Pet Registry and Australia Post each hold their own record, and several of them give you only 14 days.
Changing your address in NSW is a list, not a single form. Our count from the Service NSW moving guide: 4 groups of records change together once they sit in your MyServiceNSW account, and at least 8 more personal records each have their own change-of-details page. After those come your federal records in myGov, the electoral roll and your mail.
Three of those stops give you 14 days. For your driver licence, "you must tell us your new address within 14 days". Services Australia wants your new address within 14 days "even if you don't get a payment from us". If you can't update your pet's details online, you can notify council with the C3C Change of details form within 14 days of the change.
The electoral roll works the other way. You can enrol at your new address once you have lived there for at least one month, so that one waits.
Here is the whole list, in the order we at Miller Street Movers would tackle it.
Which records does one update actually reach?
The sorting rack: where one new address lands
MyServiceNSWOne update fills these
- Driver licence and vehicle registrations
- CTPupdates automatically
- Boat licence and vessel registrations
- RSA/RCG and other liquor and gaming records
- Seniors/Senior Savers Card
myGovOne update fills these
- ATO
- Centrelink
You choose which linked services
No chuteEach waits for its own update
- Opal card
- E-Toll account
- Working with Children Check
- NDIS Worker Check
- Transport concession entitlement card
- EnableNSW
- NSW Seniors Card
- Dog or cat (Pet Registry)
- Electoral roll (AEC)
- Mail redirection (Australia Post)
Start with the shortcut. Add the services to your MyServiceNSW Account and Service NSW lets you change your address in one go for:
- driver licence and vehicle registrations
- boat licence and vessel registrations
- RSA/RCG competency card and other liquor and gaming records
- Seniors/Senior Savers Card
Your CTP comes along for free. It is linked to your vehicle registration, so changing the vehicle's address updates your CTP details automatically.
The federal side has its own shortcut. For the ATO, the quickest way is online through a myGov account linked to the ATO. If you update through your Centrelink online account, Services Australia passes the new information to some linked services automatically.
One update does not reach everything: Service NSW changes flow through only to services added to your MyServiceNSW account, federal records such as the ATO, Medicare and Centrelink go through myGov, and the electoral roll is updated with the AEC separately.
The NSW records people forget
| Record | Where to change it | Deadline or note from the source | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driver licence | online, 13 77 88, or any service centre | within 14 days | NSW Government |
| Vehicle registration | MyServiceNSW account, in the one-go group | CTP updates automatically with it | Service NSW |
| Opal card address | its own Service NSW change page | listed in the Service NSW moving guide | Service NSW |
| Personal E-Toll account | its own Service NSW change page | listed in the guide | Service NSW |
| Working with Children Check | its own Service NSW change page | listed in the guide | Service NSW |
| NDIS Worker Check | its own Service NSW change page | listed in the guide | Service NSW |
| Dog or cat | NSW Pet Registry online, or local council | required by law to keep details current; if you cannot use the online registry, notify council on the C3C form within 14 days of the change | NSW Office of Local Government |
| Services Australia (Centrelink) | Centrelink online account on myGov | should be told within 14 days | Services Australia |
| ATO | myGov linked to the ATO | postal form up to 28 days to process | Australian Taxation Office |
| Electoral roll | AEC | enrol at new address after living there at least one month | Australian Electoral Commission |
| Australia Post redirection | proof of identity needed | Australia Post |
Outside the one-go group, the same guide lists many more records. Eight that most households should check each have their own change-of-details page:
- personal E-Toll account
- Opal card address
- Working with Children Check registration
- NDIS Worker Check
- transport concession entitlement card
- EnableNSW
- NSW Seniors Card
- registering your dog or cat
These are easy to miss. Your licence update won't touch your Opal card, and your Working with Children Check sits in its own record whether you coach on Saturdays or work in a school.
Distance doesn't matter either. A move from Neutral Bay to Kirribilli is a few streets, but it is a new address on every one of these records.
Your pet's registry address is a legal duty
Cat and dog owners are required by law to keep their details and their pet's information up to date. You can do it online with a NSW Pet Registry account, using your MyServiceNSW login, or at your local council. If you can't get online, use the C3C Change of details form within 14 days.
Watch the location rule. Your pet's primary address defaults to your home address. If the pet lives somewhere else, even temporarily, the registry says you must update its location to stay compliant. You can add extra locations and set them for all your pets or just one.
That matters on a move. Some people send the dog to a friend's place while the boxes go down a walk-up or into a booked goods lift. The registry says that if your pet lives somewhere else, even temporarily, you must update its location, so add the temporary address for the stay.
Renting with a pet is a separate question. For a new tenancy, apply for pet consent within 7 days of entering the tenancy agreement and the pet can stay while the landlord decides.
Tradies and licence holders have a longer list
Some of the trade and business records the guide lists
If you work under a licence, the guide's trade and business section lists many more records, including: tradesperson certificate, owner-builder permit, contractor licence, high risk work licence, general construction induction card, firearms licence, security operative licence and recreational fishing licence.
Run a business from home? The guide has separate links for personal mail and business mail, so redirecting one won't cover the other.
Federal records and the electoral roll are separate stops
Federal records in myGov, and the roll on its own
- My account
- Profile
- Contact details
- ATO
- Medicare optional
- Centrelink optional
You choose which linked services receive the update
Electoral roll: AEC, separate update
The ATO lets you update your residential address, postal address, phone numbers and email. In myGov, go to My account, then Profile, then Contact details, and you choose which linked services receive the update. Tick them deliberately.
Paper is slower. The ATO says the Change of details for individuals form can take up to 28 days to update your records after they receive it. If you phone, have your TFN ready.
The electoral roll is its own job. When you move house, the AEC says you must update your enrolment, and you can enrol at the new address after living there at least one month. You'll need an Australian driver licence number, passport number, Medicare card details or citizenship number, or someone already enrolled who can confirm your identity. Paper forms are available.
Our tip: put a reminder in your phone for one month after moving day. It is the one update you can't do on the day.
Renting? Update through Centrelink for Rent Assistance
If you rent and get a payment, how you update matters. Through a linked Centrelink online account, you can be assessed automatically for Rent Assistance. Update another way and Services Australia can't assess you automatically.
Between leases, with a gap between keys? Give Services Australia a secure mailing address. They can only send mail to your future address from the date you said you'll live there. Until then it goes to the last mailing address you gave them.
How long should mail redirection run?
Redirection to an Australian address, in months
- Up to 1 month
- Up to 3 months
- Up to 6 months
- Up to 12 months
Redirection catches the senders you forget. It doesn't replace telling them. To set it up you must prove your identity; online, that means a driver licence, passport, foreign passport with visa, birth certificate, citizenship certificate or ImmiCard.
Redirection to an Australian address runs for up to 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and eligible concession cardholders pay a lower rate. Australia Post's page carries the current prices and mentions a retail price update from 1 July 2026, so check the amount there before you pay.
Our view: choose a length that outlasts your slowest sender. Annual statements and once-a-year renewals are the ones that turn up at the old letterbox months later.
If you need longer, you can extend. You'll need your 9-digit customer reference number, and you must pay by the date on the extension letter or take out a new service.
If you're leaving a relationship or living with violence
Services Australia says to review all the addresses they hold for you to keep your information secure. That includes mailing addresses as well as your home address. Their page is the right place to start.
Your deadlines at a glance
- Move day
- Day 14
- Driver licence address. NSW Government
- Services Australia address. Services Australia
- Pet Registry C3C paper form. NSW Office of Local Government
- One month living thereElectoral enrolment at the new address becomes possible. Australian Electoral Commission
ATO change of details by post: up to 28 days after they receive the form. Australian Taxation Office
Moving day starts three 14-day clocks: your licence, Services Australia and, if you use paper, the Pet Registry form. At one month you can enrol at the new address. If you post your ATO form, allow up to 28 days after it arrives.
Do the online updates the week you move and most of these clocks never become a problem.
Ready to lock in your moving day?
Every deadline above counts from the day you move, so the date comes first. For the week-by-week timeline, use our moving house checklist for Sydney. If you're in a strata building, our strata moving paperwork guide covers the building side.
When you have a date in mind, tell Miller Street Movers where you're moving from and to on our Book a Quote page, and we'll come back to you with a quote.
